Just like whiskey is connected to Scotland, glass making is the No. 1 traditional handicraft of the Czech lands. Known as Bohemian Crystal, the hard and clear glass has been used already since the 17th century. At when the idea of "glass precious stones" is born, Czechs are again right there.
The marriage of creative ideas with hard work pays off when large compositions of chandeliers emerge, soon casting light on French King Louis XV, the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa or the ruler of the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman III. In addition to Italy and France, Bohemia becomes one of the most important chandelier production centers in Europe.
The trajectory of glass production in Northern Bohemia has its highs and lows. And history and politics play a big role. After WWII, traditional glassmakers are expelled from the country and their works are nationalized. What happens with the glass production centralized into a few state owned enterprises?
Join me on a day trip filled with many fascinating stories that are now reflected in dozens of living workshops and diverse glass and jewelry production.
Glass as a noble material in churches and cathedrals, as a for centuries, when the sun's rays pass through colored stained glass and through thousands of small fragments enter the spiritual space once created by the ideas and visions of monarchs, the art of their architects and the hands of skilled builders…
An equally magical space is the glassworks, which combines the beauty of spirit and creative ideas with the art of glass masters, who embody their breath, sweat and demanding but beautiful work in the hot material…
Feel the breeze in the forests that have been the playfield for a demanding but noble and magical discipline of glassmaking for centuries.
Watch the play of light coming through colorful objects all around you.
Understanding the area and watching the masters in the magical spaces of their glassworks
do their work pays off the most on the spot.
